Planescape: Torment Sequel Almost Happened, But Funding Fell Through

Fans of the classic RPG Planescape: Torment were closer to a sequel than they might have imagined. Beamdog, the studio known for its enhanced editions of classic RPGs, began extensive work on a new game set in the Planescape universe back in 2016. Unfortunately, they couldn’t secure publisher support, forcing the creative team to abandon the project despite their preparations.

The new project, titled Planescape: Unraveled, would have returned to the world of the original game. Players would have controlled one of three aspects of the character Ravel Puzzlewell, exploring their own existence. Veteran RPG developers David Gaider and Chris Avellone were involved in the project, and Wizards of the Coast even considered integrating the game’s content into a new edition of Planescape, demonstrating confidence in its potential.

Despite the creative support, funding proved elusive. According to Gaider, some publishers felt the Planescape universe wasn’t commercially viable. Others were hesitant due to Beamdog’s perceived lack of experience developing original games. These uncertainties ultimately led to Planescape: Unraveled being shelved.

Beamdog’s reputation at the time, primarily for remastering classic RPGs, likely contributed to these doubts. The company was reportedly struggling to gain publisher confidence in its ability to execute original projects. Gaider himself left the studio after another canceled project and went on to found Summerfall Studios.

While this particular sequel never materialized, Planescape: Torment remains a beloved game for many. Following the success of titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, the possibility of another studio reviving the Planescape universe remains on the table.
