Painkiller Remake Announced: Classic FPS Returns After 21 Years

Get ready for a blast from the past! The classic FPS game Painkiller, originally released in April 2004, is making a comeback with a remake. Announced at the Future Games Show, this reimagining promises to deliver the same chaotic action fans remember, but with a modern twist.

Developed by Anshar Studio (with support from studios that worked on Baldur’s Gate 3 and Silent Hill 2), and published by Saber Interactive, the Painkiller remake will launch in the fall of this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is being built using Unreal Engine 5, ensuring a visually stunning and intense experience.

The remake will feature co-op gameplay for up to 3 players, allowing you and your friends to tear through hordes of demons together. Players will step into the role of a character battling demons in Purgatory to atone for their sins – a gothic theme that defined the original game and its expansions.

According to the game’s store page, “You have been punished for your crimes against Heaven and find yourself trapped in Purgatory. But the Creator’s voice offers you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you must prevent the fallen angel Azazel from unleashing his demon armies upon the world. Face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers, and the Nephilim – Azazel’s three great children.”

The Painkiller remake will introduce new weapons and abilities alongside the classic arsenal. A tarot card system will allow players to enhance their skills, and there will be 4 distinct playable characters to choose from.
