Free Tactical Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Due to Low Revenue
Mountaintop Studios has announced that its free-to-play tactical shooter, Spectre Divide, will be shutting down after just launching its first season. The studio cited insufficient player base and revenue as the reason for the closure.
According to CEO Nate Mitchell, Spectre Divide will be completely offline in 30 days, and Mountaintop Studios will be closing its doors this week.
Mitchell explained that developing Spectre Divide was a significant risk from the beginning, but the team was passionate about the project. Despite a promising initial launch week, the game’s active player count and revenue proved insufficient to cover daily operating costs. The studio explored various options, including seeking a publisher, additional investment, and acquisition, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
“This project was a passion project built to bring a fresh perspective to the genre and unite friends around unforgettable moments,” Mitchell stated in a message to the community. “Our team knew from the beginning that this would be a challenging journey, but we still gave it a shot.”
To mitigate player impact, Mountaintop Studios will be issuing refunds for purchases made since the launch of Season 1 and disabling new purchases. Spectre Divide will remain playable for the next 30 days before going offline permanently.
Spectre Divide featured a unique dual-body control mechanic but faced criticism for not taking enough creative risks and for experiencing technical issues. The PC version of the game was released in 2024.
